Five Great Supplements for Coughs

Our lungs and bronchi are the system that enables our most important determinant of health, BREATH. There is much that can cause damage and irritation to this crucial system, pollution from outside, indoor pollutants from our heating systems and homes, choosing to smoke (yes, cannabis counts Illinois), allergens from pets and elsewhere, and even cold winter air. Then, of course, bacterial and viral illnesses can also use the epithelium of the respiratory tract as their breeding grounds.

The good news is that as much as we can do to harm our lungs, there is almost as much we can do to support and restore healthy function, especially when it comes to dealing with a persistent cough, sore throat, or other symptoms. And most of them are botanicals available through our dispensary.

Here then are five supplements that can be used to enhance the wellbeing of your lungs and bronchi:

  1. Old Indian Wild Cherry Bark Syrup, from Planetary Herbals, is a favorite of mine. I always keep a bottle in my medicine cabinet. The combination of cough soothing and expectorant herbs quiets and resolves coughs in short order, and a quieted cough means that you can get some sleep.

  2. EHB, from Integrative Therapeutics, is more of an immune boosting blend, with Echinacea, Goldenseal and Oregon grape root. It has an antimicrobial, mucus membrane focused effect to help support the function of a healthy respiratory system.

  3. Soothing Throat Spray, from Herb Pharm, is a tiny spray bottle of pure herbal power for coughs that are more from a sore throat, without much ‘lung butter’, like a smokers cough or one from dry winter air or wood smoke. One or two quick sprays is usually enough to quiet even the harshest cough.

  4. Zinc and Throat Guard Lozenges, from Perque. Zinc is a cofactor in many functions in the body, especially the enzymes associated with immune function. Zinc is pure poison to many viruses. Honey and slippery elm bring a great soothing effect as well.

  5. Air Power, from Enzymatic Therapy, brings the power of the herb Guaifenesin, the active ingredient in the OTC drug Mucinex, but in a form with less processing and artificial ingredients. It is basically a potent expectorant that removes stubborn mucus.

Remember when healing from a respiratory problem that some of the most effective medicine is even simpler than these great botanical remedies. The best expectorant is drinking enough water and the best restorative is getting enough rest and sleep. Anyone who has had a cough will know how disruptive to good sleep a harsh cough can be and how sweet the relief of quieting that cough can feel. Of course, if you have further questions about these or any other remedies, or dealing with a cough, cold, or any other winter illness, the doctors at World Tree are ready to help you with your needs through a telehealth or in-person visit.

Lastly, I would like to make clear that these treatments are not for SARS Covid-19 symptoms, which can include a worsening cough and shortness of breath. If you have any of the symptoms of this serious ailment, please seek appropriate medical intervention without delay.
