Five homeopathic remedies to help you through this holiday season.

The holidays can be a time of joy mixed with stress, we get too excited, eat or drink too much, pine for loved ones who aren’t able to join in, or get that Jack Frost nipping at your nose. New regulations passed December of 2020 allow for homeopathic remedies to be covered under FSA/HSA plans, so it might be a good time to discover how a well-placed homeopathic remedy can work for you and your family.

Here are five remedies that may be useful to have around for the Holiday Season:

  1. Ignatia is used for various aspects of grief and sadness, especially of a sudden onset. Like missing a loved one during a festive moment because something reminds you of them. When healthy feelings of grief and loss become debilitating, Ignatia can be the boost that helps you heal.

  2. Coffea Cruda is used to calm an overexcited mind, especially when excitement prevents sleep (kids waiting for Santa) or causes headache. Although it originates from coffee, there is no caffeine in Coffea, so it’s safe for all.

  3. Lycopodium is a great remedy to use against minor GI issues like bloating, gas, constipation or heartburn. If the discomfort is worse from any pressure on the abdomen or better from passing gas or belching, Lycopodium is the remedy for you.

  4. Nux Vomica is the best homeopathic hangover remedy. GI complaints, nausea, fatigue, insomnia or headaches arising from overindulgence of food, alcohol, coffee or even tobacco may be well treated with Nux.

  5. Aconite is used when cold and dry air results in the rapid development of sneezing or cough. When you come in from the cold and get sneezy or start coughing, a dose of Aconite before you enjoy your hot cocoa may be just the thing to ease your distress.

Homeopathic remedies are ultra-diluted substances derived from plant, animal or mineral sources that trigger the body’s natural response to heal its self. They operate under the principle of ‘like cures like’, and have been safely and effectively used for a wide range of ailments for three centuries.

They do not interfere or interact with any pharmaceuticals, and are regarded as safe for use. They are delivered orally (sub-lingual, dissolved under the tongue) and should be taken at least 15 minutes before and/or after any other food or drink.

You will usually find homeopathic remedies at most health food stores. They are sold in 6C or 30C strengths, either is okay, but I usually go with a 30C for an acute condition. If the remedy fits your symptoms, one or two doses (3 pellets each) taken several hours apart should be enough to feel better. For extended use it is best to consult a qualified practitioner.
