Home Constitutional Hydrotherapy


Constitutional Hydrotherapy is a traditional naturopathic therapy to improve your constitution and overall vitality. It can be used for virtually any chronic condition, and works especially well for acute or chronic immune conditions. Constitutional hydrotherapy is also safe for most people, unless they have difficulty detecting hot or cold, or if there is an open wound. For kids, seniors, or those more sensitive to extreme temperatures, just adjust the intensity of the treatment so it’s tolerable.

This is a home variation of our in-office therapy. While it’s not quite the same as the in-office treatment, this is still a great way to boost your systems (Vis) with equipment you already have. It is performed lying face up and can be done with or without a helper.

You will need:

  • Three towels of about the same size, about the size of your torso from your neck to a couple inches below your navel (medium towels for adults, smaller towels or washcloths for kids/babies)

  • One wool blanket and a cotton sheet (sheet optional). A thick fleece blanket is ok if you do not have wool.

  • A basin or large bowl (for the wet towels)

  • Essential oils (optional)

  • A timer

This should take approximately 20 minutes for the front, 40 minutes if you do the back.


Instructions:

  1. Get a space ready to lie down flat. Prepare the wool blanket and sheet, spread it out so that you can do a wrap with the sheet inside

  2. Roll the three towels up so that they can be rung out.

  3. Soak one the towel under a tap of running cold water and wring the towel out so that it is wet, but not dripping and place the towel in the basin.

  4. Repeat with hot tap water for the other two towels, as hot as you can tolerate. Add a couple drops of essential oils (optional) to hot towels.

  5. Get comfortable on the blanket and lie down. Apply the hot towel to the chest from your neck to a couple inches below your navel. Wrap your entire body up with the blanket. Leave the warm towels on for 5 mins.

  6. After 5 minutes, quickly remove the hot towels and replace with the cold towel. Cover back up and leave the cold towel on for at least 10 mins, or until it becomes warm to the touch.

  7. If you have someone to help, you can also flip over and do another round on your back. Same as above, but the towels go on the back from the shoulders to the top of the buttocks.

  8. For an extra kick, perform a rough friction rub on the moist skin with a small dry towel to finish. The towel will stimulate your circulation and nervous system, and it feels good.

  9. Take time to relax and rest after treatment. Make sure you stay warm and drink lots of water afterwards.

  10. For acute infections, treatment can be done 1-2 times a day. For chronic conditions, do the treatment at least 1-2 times a week. For prevention, do every 1-2 weeks. Ask your naturopathic doctor for more specific recommendations or alterations.
